The Identity Shift That Happens Before Every Real Business Breakthrough

the feminine edge Aug 31, 2026

On the invisible internal work that comes before every meaningful business shift, and why strategy alone cannot produce the breakthroughs the woman running the business is not yet ready to lead.

The shift before the breakthrough

Most business breakthroughs are preceded by something that does not look like a breakthrough at all.

There is often a period, sometimes weeks, often months, of questioning, discomfort, things feeling unexpectedly hard, old strategies no longer landing, self-doubt out of proportion to the actual evidence. A pull towards something new without yet knowing how to access it.

The instinct is to look outward. A new offer. A rebrand. A different marketing strategy. Better systems. More decisive action. And these can often be a core aspect of the solution.

But in almost every meaningful business shift, the real change happens internally first. The business changes because the woman running it commits to change.

This is what an identity shift for business growth actually is the mindset shift that comes before business change, which most articles about “next-level thinking” fail to describe accurately. And it is usually the precursor to any real business breakthrough for women at this stage.

An identity shift is not becoming someone else

An identity shift is not a personality change. Not a rebrand. Not pretending to be more confident than you are.

An identity shift for business growth is the point at which a woman starts to relate to herself differently. As a leader. As a strategist. As a woman entitled to take up more space, make bigger decisions, charge accordingly, be seen for the value she actually creates.

These shifts almost always involve releasing an older version of the self. The person who worked harder to prove herself. The person who kept small to keep others comfortable. The person who built the business but has not yet inhabited the role of running it.

Becoming a CEO mindset is not about acting the part. It is about relating to yourself, honestly, as the woman the business now requires. The CEO mindset for female founders usually feels destabilising before it feels like growth.

When the business problem is not only a business problem

The signs are often visible in the business before they are visible in the founder:

  • You have been working on the same problem for months without resolving it, despite effort and intention
  • You feel stuck not because you lack ideas, but because something stops you from implementing them fully
  • You keep returning to the same patterns around visibility, pricing, boundaries or growth
  • Success brings discomfort as often as satisfaction
  • You feel a pull towards a new version of the business, but the gap feels too large to bridge alone
  • You know what you should do, but cannot quite become the woman who does it consistently

The pattern underneath: the strategy is clear, but the self-concept has not caught up with it.

This is why identity work in business is not a soft subject. It is the specific unlock behind the business breakthrough for women that strategy alone cannot produce the substance that serious business coaching for female entrepreneurs whose identity is genuinely shifting is built around.

Strategy matters but it cannot outrun identity

Many high-performing women approach the feeling of being stuck by doubling down on strategy.

Better planning. Cleaner systems. A new content strategy. A new offer structure.

Strategy matters. But when the block is an identity one, strategy alone will not resolve it. The woman implementing the strategy is running beliefs and patterns that predate the strategy.

A pricing strategy will not hold if you do not yet feel safe being seen as someone who charges more.

A visibility strategy will not work if you are protecting yourself from being fully seen.

A growth strategy will not feel sustainable if you are still proving your worth through overwork.

The work has to include both: strategic clarity about where the business is going, and the internal shift that lets the woman lead herself there.

This integration is what executive coaching for women at this level is built to do and what leadership coaching for women delivers when it goes beyond motivation. A business growth mindset for women, done seriously, is not affirmations. It is the structural work of becoming the leader the next chapter requires.

The shift is often quiet before it becomes visible

An identity shift rarely arrives as one dramatic insight. It is more often a gradual reorientation.

A woman may notice:

•  She no longer defends something she used to protect
•  A decision she would have agonised over now feels clear
•  She stops overexplaining her prices, boundaries or choices
•  She no longer wants the same version of success
•  She feels both grief and relief as the old version loosens its grip

There can be a real period of mourning for the previous version, even when the shift itself is positive. Many women mistake the discomfort for a sign that something is wrong when it is often evidence that something old is no longer fitting.

The business often responds quickly, not because everything externally changes overnight, but because the woman making the decisions has changed. The female founder business breakthrough that follows a genuine mindset shift before business change is rarely proportionate to the surface work because the surface work is not what actually shifted.

Mary Coughlin, the founder of a global movement to bring trauma-informed care to neo-natal infants, described the internal experience of her own shift:

I have never felt more emboldened to pursue my life’s passion than I have since I have been working with Mel.

— Mary Coughlin, President & Founder, Caring Essentials Collaborative

You usually cannot see the pattern clearly from inside it

This work is not easily done alone. The patterns a founder is shifting are often invisible from inside them the identity you are trying to release is the same identity looking at the problem.

I know this from having done the work myself. As I discussed in Business Insider when they covered my move from corporate leadership in London to founding The Feminine Edge from a tiny Hebridean island, the shift was never primarily about geography or role. It was about relating to myself differently — and the strategy caught up with that, not the other way around.

A thinking partner can hold the bigger picture. Notice what you are not seeing. Reflect patterns back clearly. Challenge the old identity in real time while you practise new ways of leading and deciding.

This is why business coaching for women at this level is not therapy, not pure accountability, not generic mindset work. Executive coaching for women, done well, sits at exactly this intersection.

Business coaching for female entrepreneurs whose identity is genuinely shifting requires something more than either a strategist or a coach can hold alone.

Business growth and personal evolution are not separate

Different containers support different types of shift.

Executive Coaching. Sustained 1:1 work over the arc of 6 months to a year or more. For women who want private support and intimate partnership while navigating leadership growth, identity evolution and strategic decision-making in parallel.

The Strategic Intensive. Focused engagement through a specific inflection point. For women who need to understand what is genuinely blocking growth, make a significant decision, or create clarity around the next stage.

The Inner Circle. The twelve-month container for women who want to do this work alongside other high-performing founders identity shifts held through strategy, proximity, community and shared ambition.

All three are built on the same premise: business growth and personal evolution are inseparable.

The business changes when the woman leading it changes

The next stage of your growth is not always about finding a better tactic. Sometimes it is about becoming the woman who can hold the next level of visibility, responsibility, pricing or leadership.

The stuckness you have been carrying may not be a problem to solve. It may be information.

The breakthrough is not only what changes in the business. It is who you become in order to lead it differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need coaching or therapy?

Coaching focuses on growth, strategy, leadership, decisions and future direction. Therapy is more appropriate for clinical mental health support, trauma processing or deeper psychological distress. Some women benefit from both. They serve different purposes.

What is the difference between business coaching and leadership coaching?

Business coaching often focuses on the strategy, structure and direction of the business. Leadership coaching focuses on the person leading it — identity, decision-making, confidence, boundaries and capacity. My work integrates both.

How long does an identity shift take?

It varies. Some insights happen quickly, but fully integrating a new way of leading, deciding and showing up usually happens over time through practice, support and real business decisions.

What should I expect in a first session with Mel?

The first session explores where you are now, what feels stuck, what you are trying to grow into, and what kind of support may be most useful for the season you are in.

Can coaching help if I feel like I have everything figured out strategically?

Yes. Sometimes the issue is not knowing what to do — it is becoming the woman who can do it consistently, confidently and sustainably.
