Are YOU conforming without even realising?

Charlie (the glue guy) is reading a book right now about homeschooling. It’s called The Call of the Wild and Free. I bought him it for Xmas as it sounded like the type of thing he’d like (I was right, he does!)

Anyway, we got to chatting about a point made within the book about the rationale or need for kids to receive homework, something neither of us had thought to question until now. *Warning - personal and possibly controversial viewpoints coming up!*

The point made within the book was why would you need to give children more work to do at home in their own time when they spend 7 hours a day, 5 days a week at school learning?

Hmmm - indeed when you stop to consider the rationale it doesn’t make sense…

It immediately started a lively conversation in our kitchen -

  • Was the teaching system so inefficient that they couldn’t fit all of the education into the allocated time?

  • Why would you expect small children to do more than 7 hours a day of focused, concentrated, sedentary 'learning'?

  • What was the core objective of setting homework?

We came to the conclusion that homework is in fact less about valid, additional necessary time to learn as there is no obvious reason why that couldn’t be covered within the school curriculum, and much more about teaching people to follow commands, do as they are told and learn that their own needs and desires are to be deprioritised to follow the direction and instructions of people in authority.

In other words, a method of conditioning and programming people to become good worker bees who are expected to go on and gain employment and become part of a workforce working for someone else.

As Charlie and I were having the conversation I found my voice rising and something flaming the fires in my belly.

Suddenly I really cared about this issue.

I could connect the dots with clarity and certainty that this early-life 'programming' and expectation to conform was a ‘root cause’ to a lot of the challenges I see my coaching clients deal with.

The dreaded curse of ‘never enoughness’ - always needing to do more and be more without feeling able to feel satisfied with your efforts.

Being consumed by ‘busy work’  - lurching from one thing to the next with barely a spare minute to be still, present and in the moment.

Feeling guilty for even contemplating prioritising your own needs and always putting yourself at the back of the queue - taking care of everyone and everything else first and leaving little for yourself.

Ignoring the calls of what you REALLY want to do through staying on the hamster wheel of life, secretly wondering ‘Is this it? Is this all there is?’ - then feeling even more guilty for even thinking such a thought when you have such a great life and yet still secretly feel unfulfilled.

Sound familiar?

I often reflect on my work helping people to transform and change into who they really are and who they really want to be as an unravelling of the conditioning that doesn't serve their needs - imagine you didn't need to unravel the parts of you that kept you feeling restrained and contained?

The writer of the book spoke about her 3 sons that she homeschooled and how through being able to use their time more efficiently for learning and lessons it had enabled them to follow their passions and interests to achieve incredible results.

One son had written two novels by the age of 14, another had self taught piano and composed music on his computer, and another who was more mechanically minded builds bird feeders, toys and catapults out of wood and can fix just about anything as he is so interested in how things work.

This is all possible due to their school work not taking up the whole day so they are free to follow their passions and interests. The author challenges us to imagine an education driven by passion instead of pressure.

These are achievements that most adults never reach - although many dream of having the time to do what lights them up and ‘indulge’ themselves in doing work or spending time fulfilling their passions and dreams. And so often they are shot down in flames as being unrealistic dreamers who need to get in the real world.

But what if the real world we live in could ALSO be a world in which we dance to the beat of our own drum, filled with meaning, satisfaction and fulfilment?...

What if there is another way for ALL of us? Not just some?

There is a wonderful quote that I use often when I am speaking by the author Mary Oliver -
